I recently had the great opportunity to do some card illustrations for a game called Check Yes Romeo by Margaret Catter! I don’t remember exactly when I decided I liked drawing background interiors, but there’s something soothingly methodical about drawing in perspective. It really just flexes a lot of brain processes that you don’t regularly access when doing other types of illustration.

This was a super fun project to work on since I got to focus on expressing character and narrative through environments. There’s nothing more satisfying than laying out a ton of nice tidy perspective lines just to cover them all up with someone’s daily mess! Empty rooms might be great for interior design magazines, but it’s the clutter that really brings a room to life if you ask me.

So what is Check Yes Romeo? Well, it’s part card game, part role-playing game, and part ice-breaking improv. Like, imagine being on a dating game show except you’re standing in for someone else and all you have to go off of are some basic facts and what their room looks like. Remember Room Raiders, that early aughts reality show? I saw two episodes of it at a friend’s house once and it really stuck with me for some reason. Well, Check Yes Romeo is a little like that but with more role-playing and less MTV.

I also highly recommend checking out all the other fantastic artists contributing to this project. Everyone has been a delight to work with and I can’t wait to see the snazzy print edition!
